Making Music Festivals for Kids, By Kids: The Story of Tallinn Music Week x VIVITA

Tallinn Music Week (TMW) is known as one of the most diverse and bold music talent festivals in Estonia, and for years, it has included a children's program. But in 2021, the children's festival outgrew the program and became its own mini-festival within the week-long event. We take you through the journey of how a group of 9-15 year-olds, who are passionate about music and event organizing, came together to create their own music festival.

The preparations for the festival started 3 months before the event, where the children were given the opportunity to take on responsibilities in different areas such as advertising, design, and technical implementation. With the help of TMW and VIVITA, the children were able to create a program that exceeded all expectations. The festival featured a diverse lineup of performers, workshops, and activities that kept the guests engaged and entertained throughout the day.

One of the highlights of the festival was the Mini Stage, where the children were given the opportunity to showcase their talents as performers. The stage was guided by the children themselves, who also performed on it. The festival also featured a mini version of the TMW Talks series where the main artist was interviewed by children, and the audience also had a chance to ask questions.

As the festival grows in popularity, it was evident that the children's team had grown as well. By 2022, the team had grown to 15 members, who handled the whole festival preparations from start to finish. The team was able to secure an artist from Sony Music Baltics, Eleryn Tiit, as their main artist for the festival.

“It was so great to see the invitation sent to artists and to see how skillfully the unique visual elements of the children’s festival were born from the existing design elements.” — Terje, TMW children’s program manager

It is a pleasure to see future cultural organizers grow! It is a unique experience for both parties. The organizers of TMW’s various fields can see for themselves how quickly the young people’s experience of organizing an event grows. It is enough to give direction and be a “back” supporter. The basis of everything is, of course, open communication and trust. It was a very enriching experience for our whole team!
